For Schloss Burg and its museum, a carefully designed wayfinding system combines the historic character of the site with contemporary legibility and durable design.
For Schloss Burg, the communicative and spatial foundations for a contemporary visitor experience were created. The goal was to translate the rich history of Schloss Burg into a modern, functional guidance system and a coherent strategy. We analyzed and strategically realigned the identity of Schloss Burg. The result is a communication strategy that masterfully balances historical authenticity with its appeal as a major tourist highlight, while purposefully engaging diverse target groups. Navigating an expansive, historically evolved castle complex requires maximum precision. The signage and wayfinding concept guides visitors safely through the various levels and outdoor areas without dominating the landmarked architecture. The use of coordinated materials with a clean design language respects the historical atmosphere while simultaneously meeting modern standards for accessibility and readability. The materials form an aesthetic harmony with existing surfaces such as greywacke, bluestone, sandstone, and basalt. Lettering and information made of light-anodized aluminum are permanently bonded to a layer of scratch- and UV-resistant substrate. Extensive series of tests were conducted to determine the ideal text sizes for both close-up and long-distance readability at each specific location.
