Bauhaus Bundesschule Bernau

The Bernau Visitor Center provides an accessible introduction to the history of the Bauhaus and the ADGB Trade Union School, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The newly built Bernau Visitor Centre offers interesting facts about the former ADGB Federal School and today’s Bauhaus UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the former ADGB Federal School, which was designed and built for the General German Trade Union Confederation between 1928 and 1930 under the direction of the then Bauhaus director Hannes Meyer, the architect Hans Wittwer and with the participation of all Bauhaus workshops. Since 2017, the Bundesschule and the Masters‘ Houses have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site „The Bauhaus and its Sites in Weimar, Dessau and Bernau“. The exhibition inside the new pavilion enters into a direct dialogue with the largest exhibit in sight – the Bundesschule itself – through the floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows. Exciting documents and fascinating exhibits tell the eventful history of the building under various political currents from 1920 to the present day. An expansive interactive timeline takes visitors on a journey through 100 years of Bauhaus history – from its origins, the political changes and the adaptations and conversions of the buildings from the beginning to the present day, with a mixed technique of interactive, graphic projections and historical building plans to convey the special features of the architecture in an exciting and easy-to-understand way. Access and the exhibition in the visitor centre are barrier-free and designed to be inclusive. The use of certified, solid wood materials ensures sustainable and long-lasting use.
