As a forward-looking interactive space, it brings home the dynamism and vulnerability of the sea and inspires enthusiasm for coastal protection. The exhibition’s narrative weaves together impressive panoramic walls, lifelike specimens and multimedia presentations to create a gripping story. In the wind tunnel, visitors can experience the power of the elements first-hand – from a sea breeze to a real hurricane; in the wave channel, they can interactively set real water in motion; or they can journey through hundreds of years of Sylt’s island history via a touchscreen.

In a 360-degree panoramic cinema, visitors of all ages can board a submarine via film and explore underwater life in the depths of the North Sea.
At a hands-on station, visitors can set dune sand in motion using precisely controlled air currents – helping them intuitively understand how wind shapes landscapes and how the phenomenon of shifting dunes arises.
Live webcams showing the seal colony, as well as a dedicated discovery trail for children featuring quiz terminals and audio stations, bring the ecosystem to life.

As an inclusive space for all generations, the exhibition is based on the multi-sensory principle and allows visitors to experience the content independently. Tactile objects, hands-on exhibits to touch and try out, and a dedicated audio guide system provide barrier-free access to knowledge for visitors of all educational backgrounds and with different needs.

Within the exhibition itself, recycled building materials, energy-efficient lighting and media technology, as well as extremely robust, long-lasting mechanical systems, ensure that this message about protecting our oceans remains ecologically sustainable in the long term.
