Sensoria Holzminden
The World of Fragrances and Flavours

Sensoria Holzminden

The Sensoria experience world brings the fascinating world of smell and taste to life through immersive scent, media, and interactive stations, creating an experience for all the senses.

What scent reminds you of your childhood? Is it the delicate, powdery scent of your mother’s perfume or the taste of green jelly? Have you ever missed the familiar smell of washing powder when you travel? What spices make you think of Christmas? And why can’t you stand the way you smell?

The Sensoria experience presents these fascinating topics in an entertaining and innovative way. Here, knowledge is conveyed in a sensual way. The first museum of its kind in Europe, offers immersive and interactive experiences for all the senses. There are many innovative scent and media stations where you can learn about the psychology and physiology of smelling and tasting. You will also learn about the amazing history and present of fragrance and perfume production.

The olfactory journey begins in an atmospheric room, where changing everyday scents and atmospheric projections envelop arriving guests and prepare them for the exhibition experience to come. Here the visitor becomes a living part of the multimedia installations. Afterwards, a sensual journey of discovery through different eras and regions of the world awaits them.

Visitors can see their own reflections in large-format displays and discover the anatomy of their olfactory organs. This is an impressive and interactive way to understand how the whole body interacts with scents. There is also a quiz to test your sense of smell.
The exhibition focuses on the invention of vanillin, the first flavour and fragrance that revolutionised the world. The exhibition also tells the story of the origin of this desire for, real vanilla. In the dense undergrowth of the Madagascan rainforest, visitors can explore the success story of vanilla, from its cultivation and harvesting to its global trade. At an interactive media station, you can find out what the future of fragrance might look like. The latest research is presented here, such as the fascinating fact that we have olfactory receptors all over our bodies. Using an app, you can ask questions about the future that will appear on a large ticker tape for all to see.

At the end of their journey, visitors can look forward to a very special highlight: they get to be perfumers themselves! Using a display, everyone can mix their own individual perfume and take it home as a souvenir. And so, just as in 1874, the scent from Holzminden is once again spreading out into the world – an aromatic legacy that touches and enchants people. On the roof of the building, there is a beautiful scent garden that offers all guests a dreamlike view over the city, the fabrications and the Weserbergland as the crowning glory of their visit to the exhibition. The entire exhibition is barrier-free and designed according to the ‘Design for all’ two-senses principle, so that everyone can enjoy it.
