The Money Museum explores the history of money, the role of central banks, and the fundamentals of monetary policy through interactive exhibits, hands-on displays, and multimedia experiences.
Covering an area of more than 1,000 square metres, the Money Museum presents the history of money, the Deutsche Bundesbank’s extensive coin collection and the mechanisms of monetary policy. The museum is divided into six thematic areas, the current focus of which is the European Monetary Union and the European System of Central Banks. Basic questions are answered: What is money, how does money work, who makes money and how does money value remain stable? Interaction models make abstract concepts tangible: For example, visitors can use a real control lever to determine the amount of money on the market – the central task of a central bank and the decisive instrument for stable currency.
In this playful way, visitors learn how much „fingertip feeling“ is required to keep the money supply in balance. Tangible objects and functional models make the complex theories of monetary policy easy to understand and literally tangible. Information terminals provide both spatial and thematic orientation: Each section of the exhibition is located on an interactive map and is presented in greater detail for the specialist public.
