The new Limes Tower in Hienheim offers a new perspective on the Roman frontier landscape, combining contemporary architecture with fascinating insights into life along the Limes.
A striking new landmark in Hienheim echoes the era of 2,000 years ago, when Roman watchtowers fortified the border between the Roman Empire and Germania. Built on the exact historical site, the new Limes Tower deliberately avoids a pseudo-historical reconstruction, opting instead for a modern, sculptural architectural language. Its contemporary steel-frame structure, wrapped in an elegant skin of wooden slats, leaves plenty of room for imagination and interpretation.
Upon reaching the observation deck, visitors are treated to a fascinating panoramic view. From this bird's-eye perspective, history suddenly becomes tangible as the trajectory of the ancient border wall still traces a distinct line across the landscape. This spatial experience is enhanced by a thoughtful exhibition design inside and out: specially crafted "time windows" made of weathering Corten steel frame specific historical viewpoints, vividly bringing to life the daily routines, hardships, and stories of the Roman soldiers stationed along the Limes.
