The most famous and oldest of the Rhinelanders, the Neanderthals, have been given a prominent new home on the ground floor of the museum. The important finds for the history of mankind are presented in a prominent and appropriate manner. A large circular display case, filled with many valuable archaeological finds, tells the story of Neanderthals and their ancestors. Combining indoor and outdoor spaces, the exhibition also builds a bridge from Neanderthals to Homo sapiens. The „clamp“ of the evolutionary story is a space-embracing, luminous infographic on the development and spread of Homo sapiens. With an expanded interpretation concept, new research findings and a complementary media guide app, the newly designed exhibition area offers much to discover and experience. The exhibition and foyer have been redesigned in the spirit of „design for all“. The concept was developed in a participatory exchange in dialogue with the public. Specially designed stations with touch and smell objects along the new, inclusive signage system appeal to several senses at the same time. For example, visitors can experience the smell of birch pit or the feel of a biface.
